Enhanced Alkalinity and the Limits of Climate Geoengineering

Enhanced Alkalinity and the Limits of Climate Geoengineering

Context:

A climate mitigation method called enhanced alkalinity involves spreading crushed silicate rocks on land or in water to help oceans absorb and store more CO₂. New research has raised doubts, saying that minerals released from rocks may get trapped in secondary minerals like clay, reducing the method’s carbon-storage efficiency.

  • Enhanced alkalinity is a proposed carbon dioxide removal technique aimed at increasing the natural ability of oceans to absorb COâ‚‚.
  • It involves spreading crushed silicate rocks or alkaline minerals on land, rivers, coasts or oceans.
  • When these rocks dissolve, they release ions such as calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, which increase water alkalinity.
  • Higher alkalinity helps convert dissolved COâ‚‚ into more stable forms, supporting long-term carbon sequestration.
  • The method is linked to natural rock weathering, but enhanced alkalinity tries to accelerate this process artificially.
  • It is considered part of geoengineering or negative emissions strategies.
  • The concern is that released minerals may form secondary minerals like clay, trapping alkalinity before it reaches the ocean.
  • This can reduce the ability of oceans to absorb and store atmospheric carbon dioxide.
  • Other challenges include mining impacts, energy use for crushing rocks, ecological risks and monitoring difficulties.
