Why in News?

India will host the FIDE Chess World Cup from October 30 to November 27, 2025, with the venue yet to be finalised. Goa is emerging as the frontrunner. The tournament will feature 206 players in a World Championship qualifier.

1. Full Form: FIDE stands for Fédération Internationale des Échecs (International Chess Federation).
2. Established: Founded in 1924 in Paris, France.
3. Headquarters: Lausanne, Switzerland.
4. Recognition: Recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1999 as a global sporting organization.
5. Motto: Gens una sumus (Latin) — “We are one family”.

Functions of FIDE:

• Regulates all international chess competitions.
• Publishes monthly rankings for:
  • Top 100 players
  • Top 100 women
  • Top juniors
  • Top girls
• Maintains country rankings based on average rating of top 10 male and female players.
• Connects national chess federations globally.

• Organizes multiple chess world championship formats:
  • Classical World Championship
  • Women’s World Championship
  • Rapid Championship
  • Blitz Championship

Recent Issues – FIDE vs Freestyle Chess:

• Dispute with Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour over the usage of the term “World Championship”.
• Freestyle Chess = Fischer Random / Chess960 (960 starting positions).
• Players involved: Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura.
• FIDE opposed unsanctioned use of the term “World Championship” citing it affects revenue and governance authority.
• FIDE contracts now bar players from participating in non-FIDE-sanctioned world championships.
