Context
The Indian Army has reportedly ordered 225 First-Person View (FPV) drones capable of operating in the challenging Himalayan environment. The procurement aims to strengthen high-altitude surveillance, precision targeting and tactical combat capabilities along India’s mountainous borders.

- First-Person View (FPV) drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operated using a live video feed transmitted from an onboard camera to the operator’s goggles or screen.
- Unlike conventional remotely piloted drones, FPV drones provide an immersive view, enabling precise navigation and manoeuvring in difficult terrain.
- They can perform reconnaissance, surveillance, target identification and precision-strike missions, depending on their configuration.
- High-altitude drone operations face challenges such as low air density, freezing temperatures, strong winds and reduced battery efficiency.
- Low air density reduces propeller lift, while extreme cold affects battery performance and flight endurance.

- The Army ordered 225 FPV drones from Aerodrone Robotics, following trials at altitudes up to 17,500 feet in Himalayan conditions, including Ladakh and Spiti.
