Context
CERN is exploring greater Indian participation in its future scientific programmes, particularly the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC). The FCC is envisaged as a successor to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and is expected to push the frontiers of particle physics.

- CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) is an international particle-physics research organisation headquartered near Geneva, on the France–Switzerland border.
- Its Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, housed in a 27-km underground ring.
- The LHC accelerates particles to nearly the speed of light and collides them to study fundamental constituents of matter.
- Experiments at the LHC led to the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, associated with the mechanism through which elementary particles acquire mass.
- The proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) would have a circumference of about 91 km and could initially collide electrons and positrons.
- The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is an upgrade designed to generate substantially more collision data.
- India is an Associate Member State of CERN and Indian institutions have contributed to CERN experiments and accelerator technologies.
