Context
India retained the 131st rank among 145 economies in the Global Gender Gap Index 2026, released by the World Economic Forum (WEF). India’s gender parity score improved marginally to 64.5%, but remained below the global average of 69.2%.

Explanation
- The Global Gender Gap Index, introduced by the WEF in 2006, measures the gap between women and men rather than their absolute levels of development.
- It assesses gender parity across four dimensions: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment.
- Scores range from 0 to 1; a higher score means a greater proportion of the gender gap has been closed.
- Iceland ranked 1st, followed by Finland and Norway; Iceland has closed 93% of its gender gap.
- Chad ranked last (145th), preceded by Iran (144th) and Pakistan (143rd).
- Globally, 69.2% of the gender gap has been closed across the 145 economies covered.
