Recently, the Supreme Court released Judgments and Gender: Sensitivity and Compassion in Writing Judgments, prepared by a committee chaired by former Justice Aniruddha Bose. Unlike its 2023 handbook’s focus on stereotypical language, the new report emphasises trauma-informed courtroom conduct and compassionate judgment writing.

- The 2023 Handbook on Combating Gender Stereotypes provided a glossary to replace patriarchal expressions in judgments.
- The new report, based on 125 trial-court judgments, targets moralistic reasoning and insensitive courtroom practices.
- It promotes survivor-centric, trauma-informed justice, judicial empathy and emotional intelligence.
- Judges should prevent hostile cross-examination, irrelevant questions about sexual history and remarks that re-traumatise survivors.
