WHO Report 2026: Growing Global Cancer Care Inequalities (Source: The Hindu)

Context:

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have released the Global Status Report on Cancer 2026, highlighting widening inequalities in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care. The report warns that global cancer cases could rise to nearly 35 million annually by 2050 if urgent action is not taken.

WHO Report 2026: Growing Global Cancer Care Inequalities

Explanation:

  • Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, and it is the second leading cause of death globally after cardiovascular diseases.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) is the UN’s specialized agency for global public health, while the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is WHO’s specialized cancer research agency.
  • The Global Status Report on Cancer 2026 assesses trends in cancer incidence, mortality, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care.
  • Universal Health Coverage (UHC) aims to ensure access to quality health services without financial hardship, yet fewer than one-third of countries include comprehensive cancer care in UHC packages.
  • Cancer burden varies across regions, Asia records the highest number of cases due to its large population, whereas low-income countries experience disproportionately higher mortality because of delayed diagnosis and limited healthcare infrastructure.
