Context: India has initiated nationwide HPV vaccination for adolescent girls aged 14 years to reduce cervical cancer burden.
About HPV Vaccine:
- Cause Targeted: Prevents infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV), especially types 16 & 18.
- Disease Link: HPV infection is the primary cause of cervical cancer.
- Target Group: Recommended for girls aged 9–14 years before sexual exposure.
- Nature: Preventive vaccine; does not treat existing infection.
- WHO Target: “90–70–90 strategy” — 90% girls vaccinated (by 15), 70% women screened (by 30 & 45), 90% cases treated to eliminate cervical cancer.
- Gardasil: Quadrivalent/9-valent vaccine covering HPV 6, 11, 16, 18 (and more strains in newer versions).
- Cervavac: India’s indigenously developed quadrivalent HPV vaccine by Serum Institute of India (awaiting approval).
