Context
The United Nations has stated that violence in the West Bank continues to worsen, citing rising Israeli settler attacks, expansion of settlements and outposts, and increasing pressure on Palestinian communities. The statement follows the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s July 2024 advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories unlawful.
Explanation
- The West Bank is a landlocked Palestinian territory situated west of the Jordan River, occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War (1967).
- Under the Oslo Accords (1993–95), the West Bank is divided into Areas A, B and C, with varying administrative and security control.
- Israeli settlements are civilian communities established in occupied territory and are regarded as illegal under international law by the United Nations, though Israel disputes this interpretation.
- In July 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a non-binding advisory opinion stating that Israel’s continued occupation is unlawful and should end as rapidly as possible.
