Context: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast: More heatwave days in many parts of India (April–June), Regional variation in temperatures & Slightly higher rainfall in April.
IMD Criteria for Declaring Heat Wave in India:
- A heat wave is declared only when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C in plains or 30°C in hilly regions. After this basic condition is met, a heat wave is identified using either of the following two methods.
- Under the departure from normal method, a heat wave is declared when the temperature is 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal, and a severe heat wave is declared when it is more than 6.4°C above normal.
- Under the actual temperature method, a heat wave is declared when the maximum temperature is 45°C or more, and a severe heat wave is declared when it is 47°C or more.
