Why in News?
India, Japan, the US, and Australia launched the QUAD at Sea Ship Observer Mission to deepen maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, enhancing interoperability, domain awareness, and coordination, as part of commitments under the Wilmington Declaration of September 2024.

- Formation and Purpose: The QUAD is a strategic forum comprising the United States, Japan, India, and Australia, aimed at promoting regional security, economic cooperation, and a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
- Genesis and Evolution: Initially formed in 2007, the QUAD was revived in 2017 in response to the growing challenges posed by China’s increasing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. It has held several meetings at the ministerial and leaders’ levels since then.
- Key Initiatives: The QUAD focuses on initiatives such as maritime security, infrastructure development, countering illegal fishing, and enhancing supply chain resilience. It also addresses critical issues like climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic response.
- Military Cooperation: The QUAD countries conduct joint military exercises like the Malabar naval exercises, with Australia rejoining the exercises in 2020, marking the first formal military cooperation within the group.
