Context
Oman overtook the United States as India’s largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supplier in September 2026, amid supply disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict. India’s LNG imports remained strong despite disruptions around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Explanation
- Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas, primarily methane, cooled to approximately −162°C, converting it into liquid for easier storage and transportation.
- India imports LNG to meet domestic demand for electricity generation, fertiliser production, industrial fuel and City Gas Distribution (CGD).
- Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and serves as a critical maritime chokepoint for global energy trade.
- Major LNG exporters in the Gulf include Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
- Unlike Qatar and the UAE’s principal Gulf export terminals, Oman’s LNG export terminals lie outside the Strait of Hormuz, reducing their direct exposure to disruptions within the strait.
