Context
Recently, the defence minister highlighted India’s potential to become a global shipbuilding hub, citing its skilled workforce, steel industry and growing technological capabilities. New capacity-expansion projects of GRSE and Yantra India Ltd. were also inaugurated to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing.
Explanation
- Shipbuilding includes the design, construction, repair and maintenance of commercial and naval vessels and is a strategically important manufacturing industry.
- Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) is a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence, headquartered in Kolkata.
- GRSE builds warships and other vessels for the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and overseas customers.
- Yantra India Limited (YIL) is also a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, formed after the corporatisation of the Ordnance Factory Board.
- The government promotes indigenous defence production through Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, reducing import dependence.
- Domestic shipbuilding supports strategic autonomy, maritime security, defence exports, MSMEs and skilled employment.
- India’s location along major Indian Ocean sea lanes provide additional strategic advantages.
