Why in News?
At COP30 in Belém, around 100 members of Brazil’s Munduruku Indigenous group protested against government plans to build a highway in the Amazon and permit offshore oil exploration, warning that such projects threaten the forest’s stability and accelerate climate change.
Description:
- Infrastructure threats to Amazon: Brazil’s government (under President Lula) is building a highway through the Amazon rainforest. Licence granted to Petrobras to explore offshore oil ~500 km from Amazon River mouth.
- Indigenous demands: Halt highway + oil exploration projects, Reject deforestation carbon credits, Protect ancestral lands & rights.
- Munduruku Ipereg Ayu Movement’s message: “We refuse to be sacrificed for agribusiness… Our forest is not for sale.”
Why is the Amazon important for climate action?
- Stores 71.5 billion tonnes of carbon (≈ double global CO₂ emissions of 2022).
- Increasing vulnerability due to deforestation + climate change.
- Amazon tipping point risk: A 2022 Nature study shows slow recovery from long droughts. Could shift from rainforest → drier savanna, releasing massive carbon.
- Extreme drought & fires: October 2023: 2,700 forest fires in Amazonas (highest in 25 yrs).
What exactly happened at COP30?
- November 12: Indigenous groups forced their way into COP30 venue.
- November 14: ~100 Munduruku people blocked main Blue Zone gate.
