Context
The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Mangrol, the third indigenously built Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at Mumbai. It strengthens India’s ability to detect and counter enemy submarines in shallow coastal waters.
Explanation
- Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) involves detecting, tracking and neutralising enemy submarines to protect naval vessels and coastal areas.
- Shallow Water Crafts (SWCs) are specialised naval vessels designed to operate in shallow coastal waters, where larger warships face operational limitations.
- INS Mangrol is the third vessel of the Mahe class, developed under India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.
- It was built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), with over 80% indigenous content, supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat.
- These vessels use sonar (Sound Navigation and Ranging), which uses sound waves to detect underwater objects, including submarines.
- They carry torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets to engage underwater threats.
- The Mahe-class vessels also undertake coastal surveillance, search and rescue, and mine-laying operations.
- The Navy plans to induct 16 ASW-SWCs, replacing the ageing Abhay-class corvettes.
