India hosted the 20th Session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage at the Red Fort, where the External Affairs Minister stressed the need to nurture cultural inheritance, preserve diversity, and pass heritage to future generations.

Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH):
Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) refers to the living traditions, knowledge systems, skills, and cultural expressions that communities, groups, and individuals pass down from generation to generation.
It includes things like:
- Oral traditions and expressions
- Performing arts (music, dance, theatre)
- Social practices, rituals, and festive events
- Traditional craftsmanship
- Knowledge and practices related to nature and the universe
It is a living heritage, not a monument. It focuses on transmission, continuity, community identity, and cultural diversity, as recognised under the UNESCO 2003 Convention.
About the UNESCO ICH Framework:
- Adopted in 2003; entered into force in 2006.
- Focuses on identification, documentation, transmission, and revitalisation of living heritage.

India and Intangible Cultural Heritage:
India has 15 elements inscribed on the UNESCO ICH Representative List. Vedic Chanting, Ramlila, Kutiyattam, Ramman, Mudiyettu, Kalbelia Folk Songs and Dances, Chhau Dance, Buddhist Chanting of Ladakh, Sankirtana, Traditional Brass and Copper Craft of Thatheras of Jandiala Guru, Yoga, Nowruz, Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja, and Garba.
