- Historically, India’s regulatory framework burdened businesses with thousands of compliances, nearly 40% of which carried imprisonment clauses.
- To replace this “culture of fear” with trust, the Jan Vishwas Act, 2023 was notified on 11 August 2023, decriminalising 183 provisions across 42 Central Acts.
- By shifting minor procedural lapses from criminal courts to monetary penalties, the Act primarily benefits MSMEs, entrepreneurs, and common citizens by enhancing the Ease of Doing Business and Living.
- Decriminalisation means removing criminal penalties and replacing them with civil penalties like fines.
- The Bill amends provisions of several Central Acts to reduce compliance burden.
