- Habitat: Found in wetlands, grasslands, scrublands, and agricultural landscapes; prefers open habitats.
- Type: Habitat generalist; avoids dense forests and highly urbanised areas.
- Distribution: Found across South & Southeast Asia and Middle East; in India, widespread in plains, wetlands, and agro-pastoral landscapes.
- Ecological Role: Acts as a natural pest controller by regulating rodent populations.
- Conservation Status: IUCN – Least Concern; listed under Schedule II (Part II) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
- CITES Status: Appendix II (regulated international trade).
- Threats: Habitat fragmentation, road mortality, hybridisation with domestic cats, and disease transmission.
