Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting in Chhattisgarh and reiterated the Centre’s March 31, 2026 deadline to eliminate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) from India.
Description:
Naxalism/ Left Wing Extremism (LWE) / Maoism:
- Meaning: Indian manifestation of Maoist ideology, advocating armed struggle to overthrow the Indian state.
- Origin: Naxalbari movement (1967) in West Bengal.
- Nature: Ideology-driven insurgency, not merely a development or law-and-order issue.
- Objective: Establishment of a Maoist state through “protracted people’s war”.
- Methods: Guerrilla warfare, IED attacks, Extortion and parallel administration
- Areas of Influence (Current): Limited pockets in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Telangana.
Security & Policing Measures:
- Operation Steeplechase (1971): Joint operation by Army, CAPFs, and state police to suppress early Naxalite movement.
- Operation Green Hunt (2009): Large-scale coordinated deployment of CAPFs to reclaim Maoist strongholds.
- Specialised Forces:
- CoBRA (CRPF): Jungle warfare and guerrilla operations.
- Greyhounds (Andhra Pradesh/Telangana): Elite anti-Naxal force.
- Bastariya Battalion (Chhattisgarh): Recruits local tribal youth for counterinsurgency.
- Unified Command (2010): Institutional mechanism for inter-state coordination among LWE-affected states.
ROSHNI Scheme:
- Skill development and employment for rural and tribal youth in LWE areas.
- Establishment of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in LWE-affected districts.
- Objective: Reduce recruitment base by improving employability.
