WWF Living Planet Report 2026: 73% Decline in Wildlife Populations (Source: The Indian Express)

Context

The WWF Living Planet Report 2026 highlights a 73% average decline in monitored vertebrate wildlife populations between 1970 and 2022. Habitat destruction, overexploitation, climate change, invasive species and pollution are identified as major drivers of biodiversity loss.

Living Planet Index

Explanation

  • The Living Planet Report is published by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to assess global biodiversity trends.
  • The Living Planet Index (LPI), produced by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), tracks changes in the relative abundance of monitored wildlife populations.
  • It covers vertebrates—mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
  • A 73% decline represents the average change in monitored population sizes, not the percentage of species extinct or individual animals lost.
  • The report analyses 35,803 population trends across 5,790 vertebrate species.
  • Freshwater ecosystems recorded the steepest decline (85%), followed by terrestrial (69%) and marine ecosystems (59%).
  • Habitat loss and degradation, particularly from agriculture and food production, are major threats.
  • Conservation successes involving tigers, green turtles and southern African elephants demonstrate the importance of sustained habitat protection and species recovery programmes.
