Context
ISRO and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) recently reviewed preparations for Chandrayaan-5 (LUPEX), a joint lunar mission planned for 2028.

Explanation
- Chandrayaan-5, also known as the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) Mission, is a joint mission of ISRO and JAXA to explore the Moon’s south polar region.
- ISRO is developing the lander, while JAXA is building the rover; the mission will be launched on Japan’s H3 rocket.
- The rover will study lunar topography, regolith, and water-ice to assess resources for future human exploration.
- NASA and ESA are contributing scientific payloads, making it an international collaboration.
- The mission builds on the success of Chandrayaan-3 (2023) and will be preceded by Chandrayaan-4, India’s planned lunar sample return mission.
- The mission aims to explore water and water-ice on the Moon’s surface and subsurface through an advanced rover and multiple international scientific payloads.
