- Seychelles is an archipelagic island nation in the Western Indian Ocean, strategically located along important Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOCs).
- Indians first migrated to Seychelles in the 18th century, and today the Indian diaspora (PIOs/NRIs) forms about 5% of its population, mainly of Gujarati and Tamil origin.
- India established diplomatic relations with Seychelles after its independence in 1976 and has remained a major development and security partner.
- Seychelles occupies an important place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the broader MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) initiative.
- Bilateral cooperation covers maritime security, anti-piracy operations, counter-terrorism, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance, capacity building, defence training, healthcare, education and infrastructure development.
