Context
Recently, Meghalaya launched Mission Clouded Leopard to protect the mainland clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), its State animal. The programme focuses on habitat restoration, scientific monitoring, landscape connectivity, frontline capacity and community participation.

Explanation
- Clouded leopards belong to genus Neofelis: mainland clouded leopard and Sunda clouded leopard.
- The mainland species occurs from the eastern Himalayas to Southeast Asia and southern China; in India, mainly in the Northeast, Sikkim and northern West Bengal.
- It is a nocturnal, largely arboreal forest cat, identified by cloud-shaped coat markings and a long balancing tail.
- Status: IUCN – Vulnerable; CITES – Appendix I; Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 – Schedule I.
- India’s national Conservation Action Plan promotes habitat corridors, camera traps, genetics, environmental DNA and transboundary cooperation.
