Context
The government highlighted the progress of the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses on its first anniversary, October 11, 2026. Launched in 2025 with an allocation of ₹11,440 crore, the six-year mission aims to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses by 2030–31, reduce imports and improve farmers’ incomes.
Explanation
- India is the world’s largest producer of pulses, which contain approximately 20–25% protein and contribute to nutritional security.
- The Mission operates from 2025–26 to 2030–31, focusing on Tur (Arhar), Urad and Masur (Lentil).
- It targets 350 lakh tonnes of production, productivity of 1,130 kg/hectare and cultivation across 310 lakh hectares by 2030–31.
- It promotes climate-resilient seeds, 87.5 lakh free seed kits, cluster-based cultivation across 489 districts and 1,000 dal-processing units.
- National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Limited (NCCF) will procure 100% of the produce offered by willing, registered farmers growing Tur, Urad and Masur at Minimum Support Price (MSP) for four years (2025–26 to 2028–29).
- SATHI portal enables seed traceability, while e-Samriddhi supports farmer registration and procurement.
- India’s pulse production reached 274.09 lakh tonnes in 2025–26, according to the Third Advance Estimates.
