Why in News?
Around 30,000 Motok community members staged a torchlight rally in Sadiya (Assam) demanding ST status and Sixth Schedule protection for their autonomous council.
Description:
Who are the Motoks?
- An indigenous community of Assam.
- Originally followers of the Vaishnavite reformist movement started by Aniruddhadeva in the 16th century.
- Historically associated with the Motok Kingdom (17th–18th century) that challenged Ahom rule.
- Concentrated mainly in Upper Assam (Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar districts).
Current Demands:
- Scheduled Tribe (ST) status → Pending for many years.
- Upgradation of Motok Autonomous Council to the Sixth Schedule framework for constitutional protection and greater autonomy.
- These demands were part of the 2014 BJP electoral promises to six indigenous Assamese communities.

Political & Constitutional Context:
- Sixth Schedule (Articles 244 & 275) → Special provisions for tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram.

- ST recognition would ensure reservation benefits in education, jobs, political representation.
