Why in News?

The NARI 2025 Report, based on a survey of 12,770 women across 31 cities, found that 40% of urban women feel unsafe. Mumbai, Vizag, Kohima ranked safest, while Delhi, Kolkata, Patna and Jaipur ranked lowest, highlighting gaps in infrastructure and reporting.

Key Findings of NARI 2025 Report:

1. Perception of Safety:
   1. 40% of urban women feel “unsafe” or “not so safe.”
   1. National safety score: 65% (basis for city rankings).
   1. Only 22% of women reported incidents of harassment to authorities.
2. Harassment Trends:
   1. 7% women faced harassment in 2024 (staring, catcalling, lewd comments, unwanted touching).
   1. Women aged 18–24 years most vulnerable.
   1. The figure is ~100 times higher than reported NCRB 2022 crime statistics.
3. City Rankings:
   1. Least safe cities: Delhi, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi, Srinagar, Faridabad.
   1. Safest cities: Mumbai, Kohima, Vishakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagar.
4. Reasons for Insecurity:
   1. Poor lighting, unsafe public transport, inadequate policing, lack of infrastructure.
   1. Social stigma & fear of harassment discourage reporting.
5. Workplace Safety:
   1. 53% women unclear if their workplace had a POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Policy, which is mandatory by law.
