Why in News?

NATGRID, conceived after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, has now become fully operational and is increasingly used by Central and State security agencies to access real-time government and private databases for investigation and intelligence purposes.

Description:

About NATGRID:

  • A centralised intelligence and investigation support platform under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • Conceptualised in 2009, post-26/11 attacks to bridge information gaps between agencies.
  • Became operational in 2023–24, after over a decade of development.
  • Currently receives approx. 45,000 data requests per month from security agencies.

Key Features:

  1. Data Integration: Provides seamless access to data related to
    1. Driving licences
    1. Aadhaar records
    1. Airline travel
    1. Bank transactions
    1. Phone records
    1. Social media accounts that share issue-based content
  2. Single-Window Access: Eliminates the need for agencies to request multiple departments for information.
  3. Real-time analytics for quick response during investigations.
  4. Confidentiality safeguards:
    1. User identity protected
    1. No FIR required to access data
  5. Wider access:
    1. This combined data will be made available to 11 central agencies, which are: the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), Intelligence Bureau (IB), National Investigation Agency (NIA), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Financial Intelligence Unit (India) (FIU), Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Directorate General of GST Intelligence.
    1. Now extended to State Police and Superintendent of Police–rank officers.

Objectives:

  • Provide faster, unified intelligence to agencies.
  • Reduce information delays in counterterrorism and criminal investigations.
  • Strengthen national security, especially amid rising cyber threats.
  • Enable “investigate first, verify faster” approach by consolidating data.
