Context: A recent complaint over alleged disrespect to the national flag and renewed debates on Vande Mataram have brought focus on rules and evolution of National Symbols of India.

About National Symbols of India:

  • National Flag: Adopted on 22 July 1947; based on design by Pingali Venkayya (1921)
  • Evolution: Bhikaji Cama unfurled the flag at (Stuttgart, 1907)
  • Feature: Ashoka Chakra (24 spokes) replaced charkha in final design
  • Law: Governed by Flag Code of India, 2002 → allows citizens to hoist the flag with dignity (all days, subject to rules)
  • Display Rules: Must be rectangular (3:2 ratio); saffron at top; should not touch ground/water or be used as drapery
  • Restrictions: Prohibits use for commercial purposes, costume, or uniform
  • Protection: Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 penalises desecration
