Why in News?
The NTCA has limited the definition of tiger corridors mainly to 32 “least cost pathways” from its 2014 report, excluding multiple WII studies and AITE data. This move may ease clearances for mining projects, sparking legal and conservation concerns.
Description:
- Statutory Body under MoEFCC: NTCA is a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), established in 2006 under Section 38L of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
- Objective: Strengthening Project Tiger: It provides legal backing to Project Tiger, ensures compliance with its directives, and enhances tiger reserve management with Centre-State coordination.
- NTCA Composition: The Chairperson is the Union Minister of MoEFCC, Vice-Chairperson is the Minister of State for MoEFCC, and it includes 3 Members of Parliament, the Secretary of MoEFCC, and other experts.
- Focus on Local Communities: It aims to integrate conservation with the livelihood interests of local people living near tiger reserves.
- Parliamentary Oversight: NTCA operates under the oversight of Parliament, ensuring transparency and accountability in tiger conservation.
