PM Modi inaugurated the South India Natural Farming Summit 2025 in Coimbatore. He announced expanded support for natural farming and urged states and scientists to scale the movement.

Definition:

Chemical-free, low-input farming system that avoids all manufactured inputs. Popularised by Masanobu Fukuoka (Fukuoka Method / Do-nothing farming).

India’s Focus:

  • India aims to become a global hub of natural farming.
  • Approach: traditional knowledge + scientific validation + farmer support.
  • Strong push towards multi-crop agriculture instead of monoculture.
  • Union Government implements ZBNF as Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Padhati (BPKP), a sub-scheme of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY).
Key Features: No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Use of local resources: cow dung, urine, biomass, mulching. Enhances soil microorganisms and natural soil regeneration. Low cost, sustainable, water efficient.
Zero-Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) – Core Elements:
  • Jeevamrutha – natural fertilizer.
  • Bijamrutha – seed treatment.
  • Mulching (Achhadana) – soil moisture retention.
  • Whapasa – soil aeration, reduced irrigation.
Natural Farming Vs Organic Farming (Key Difference):
  1. Natural: No external inputs at all.
  2. Organic: Uses organic fertilizers (compost/vermicompost).
