Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT)

Why in News?

The Supreme Court has agreed to examine the feasibility of making Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) mandatory in blood banks to ensure safe blood transfusion, particularly considering reported HIV infections linked to contaminated transfusions.

Description:

About NAT

  • Nucleic Acid Test (NAT) is a highly sensitive molecular diagnostic technique.
  • It detects the genetic material (RNA/DNA) of pathogens in donated blood.
  • Used for early detection of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs).

Objective: To ensure safe and infection-free blood transfusion, thereby protecting the Right to Life under Article 21.

Pathogens Detected: NAT is primarily used to detect HIV, Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).

NAT vs. ELISA (The “Window Period” Advantage):

The “Window Period” is the time between initial infection and when a test can detect it.

FeatureELISA (Traditional)NAT (Advanced)
Detection BasisDetects Antibodies or Antigens.Detects Viral RNA/DNA (Genetic material).
Window PeriodLong (weeks to months).Very Short (days).
SensitivityLower in early stages of infection.Ultra-high; detects very low viral loads.
False NegativesHigher risk during the window period.Significantly minimized.

Implementation Issues:

  • Higher cost compared to ELISA.
  • Infrastructure and technical expertise required.
  • Not uniformly implemented across all States.
