India has launched Operation Sagar Bandhu to deliver humanitarian assistance to cyclone-affected Sri Lanka, reaffirming the Neighbourhood First policy and India’s role as a first responder in the Indian Ocean region.

What is Operation Sagar Bandhu?
- A humanitarian assistance mission launched by India in 2024–25 to support Sri Lanka after a severe cyclone.
- Part of India’s broader ‘SAGAR’ vision—Security and Growth for All in the Region.
- Supplies delivered via Indian Navy ships to Colombo.
- Preceded by past operations like Operation Sea Waves, Operation Rahat, Operation Dost (Türkiye earthquake), etc.
Mission Objectives:
- Provide essential relief materials: food, medicines, tents, water, power equipment etc. Relief transported by INS Nireekshak and INS Udaygiri.
- Support Sri Lanka during its time of crisis and natural disaster recovery.
- Strengthen maritime-neighbourhood cooperation.
