Orbital Data Centres and India’s Space Computing Ambition

Context:

Bengaluru-based startup Pixxel, in collaboration with US firm Axiom Space, is planning to launch India’s first orbital data centre satellite. The mission aims to test whether data processing and AI workloads can be performed directly in space instead of relying entirely on Earth-based data centres.

  • An orbital data centre is a satellite-based computing facility that processes and stores data in space.
  • Conventional satellites usually transmit raw data to Earth, whereas orbital data centres can process information onboard before transmission.
  • Space offers natural cooling due to vacuum conditions, potentially reducing energy consumption of data centres.
  • Radiation, microgravity, heat dissipation, and hardware reliability are major technological challenges in space computing.
