Context: 14th April every year is celebrated as Birth Anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.

BR AmbedKar:

  • Birth: 14 April 1891
  • Known as the “Father of the Indian Constitution” and chief architect of the Constitution.
  • Served as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly.
  •  First Law Minister of independent India (1947–1951).
  •  Belonged to the Mahar caste, faced caste discrimination → major influence on his reformist ideas.
  • Champion of Dalit rights and social justice, fought against untouchability.

Key Contributions:

  • Advocated Fundamental Rights, equality, and social justice.
  • Instrumental in shaping provisions related to affirmative action/reservation.
  • Worked for labour welfare (8-hour workday, maternity benefits).

Important Movements:

  • Mahad Satyagraha (1927) – Right to access public water
  • Temple Entry Movements
  • Burning of Manusmriti (1927) as protest against caste hierarchy

Political Role:

  • Founded Independent Labour Party (1936)
  • Later formed Scheduled Castes Federation

Poona Pact (1932):

  • Agreement with Mahatma Gandhi replacing separate electorates for Dalits with reserved seats.

Major Works:

  • Annihilation of Caste
  • The Buddha and His Dhamma
  • Who Were the Shudras?

Religion:

  • Converted to Buddhism in 1956 at Nagpur along with followers → Navayana Buddhism.

Awards:

Posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna (1990).

Constitutional Linkages:

  • Associated with Article 17 (Abolition of Untouchability)
  • Advocated for constitutional morality and rule of law
