Context
Tamil Nadu has expanded its Breakfast Scheme to Classes VI–VIII in government and government-aided schools. The State initiative complements the Union government’s PM POSHAN, which primarily provides hot cooked mid-day meals (Lunch) to children in government and government-aided schools.

Explanation
- Tamil Nadu launched its Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme in 2022, initially covering Classes I–V; it has now been expanded from class 6-8 and renamed the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.
- It provides breakfast, aiming to improve nutrition, attendance and learning outcomes.
- Thus, Tamil Nadu scheme is equal to breakfast plus State initiative; PM POSHAN is mid-day meal plus Centre-State scheme.
- Both address classroom hunger, malnutrition, enrolment, attendance and retention.
- Incidentally Tamil Nadu was the first state in India to pioneer and introduce the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in 1950s, which was later adopted Nationwide.
