Context
The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme from 2026–27 to 2030–31 with a financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore.
Explanation
- PM-KISAN, launched in February 2019, is a Central Sector Scheme implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.
- The scheme uses Aadhaar authentication, digital beneficiary verification, and Public Financial Management System (PFMS) for transparent fund transfers.
- It aims to support expenditure on seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, farm machinery, and other agricultural inputs while reducing dependence on informal credit.
- PM-KISAN complements initiatives such as PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), Kisan Credit Card (KCC), e-NAM, and the Digital India programme.
- It is a key instrument for income support, financial inclusion, rural welfare, and strengthening agricultural productivity.
