Context: The Centre is planning PM-KUSUM 2.0 with addition of battery energy storage to address solar supply mismatch in agriculture.
About PM-KUSUM:
- Launched in 2019; implemented by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
- Objective: Promote solarisation of agriculture, reduce diesel dependence, and enhance farmers’ income.
- Components:
- Component A: Decentralised solar power plants
- Component B: Standalone solar pumps
- Component C: Solarisation of grid-connected pumps
- Agrivoltaics Target: Promotes co-location of solar panels with crops with a target of ~10 GW capacity under Component A.
- Key Issue: Solar supply–demand mismatch (peak generation at midday vs demand in morning/evening).
PM-KUSUM 2.0 Proposal: Introduction of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to store surplus solar energy and supply during demand hours.
