Context:
The Union Ministry of Education has renewed efforts to implement the PM SHRI scheme in West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu after delays in signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). The scheme aims to develop selected schools into model institutions aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
- PM SHRI (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme launched in 2022 by the Ministry of Education.
- The scheme aims to develop more than 14,500 schools as exemplar schools implementing the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
- PM SHRI schools are selected from existing government and government-aided schools managed by Central, State, and local bodies.
- The scheme has a five-year implementation period.
- Schools are expected to promote experiential learning, competency-based education, holistic development, and multilingualism.
- PM SHRI focuses on modern infrastructure, smart classrooms, digital learning, green schools, skill education, sports facilities, and inclusive education.
- Selection of schools requires States and Union Territories to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Ministry of Education.
- Funding is shared between the Centre and States under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme mechanism.
- The scheme seeks to create demonstration schools that can guide wider school education reforms across India.
