Conservation Status:IUCN Red List: Vulnerable (VU) CITES: Appendix II
- Polar bears are the largest carnivorous land mammals, highly adapted to Arctic conditions.
- They are classified as marine mammals as they depend on sea ice for hunting, breeding, and movement.
- Their white-appearing fur (due to light reflection) and help in camouflage and heat absorption (below the fur is a black skin).
- A thick fat layer provides insulation and energy storage.
- They are found across the Arctic (Alaska, Canada, Russia, Greenland, Svalbard) and are absent in Antarctica.
- Sea ice is essential for hunting seals, their primary food source.
- They are apex predators and keystone species, maintaining ecological balance.
- Strong swimmers, they can travel long distances; mostly solitary in nature.
- Climate change and melting sea ice threaten their survival by reducing hunting grounds.
