PSLV Launch Vehicle Anomaly and Mission Reliability (Source:  The Hindu)

Context:

The Government has stated that the anomaly affecting ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has been identified and resolved following an expert committee review. The issue came to light after the PSLV-C62 mission carrying the EOS-09 satellite failed to complete its intended trajectory due to a third-stage anomaly.

PSLV Anomaly and India’s Space Reliability Framework

Explanation:

  • PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) is ISRO’s most reliable and versatile launch vehicle, often called the “workhorse” of the Indian space programme.
  • It is a four-stage launch vehicle using alternating solid and liquid propulsion stages.
  • PSLV is primarily designed to place satellites into Polar Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO), but can also launch satellites into GTO, LEO, and other orbits.
  • It has launched major missions such as Chandrayaan-1, Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), AstroSat, and numerous foreign satellites.
  • EOS (Earth Observation Satellites) are used for agriculture, disaster management, environmental monitoring, urban planning, and national security.
  • A launch vehicle anomaly refers to an unexpected malfunction in propulsion, guidance, control, or structural systems affecting mission performance.
  • ISRO investigates anomalies through expert committees to improve mission reliability and safety.
