Why in News?
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for procurement of 114 Rafale multirole fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and additional P-8I aircraft for the Indian Navy, with proposals worth about ₹3.6 lakh crore.

About Rafale Aircraft:
- Manufacturer: Dassault Aviation (France)
- Type: 4.5 generation multirole fighter aircraft
- Roles: Air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance, nuclear delivery
- Equipped with: AESA radar (RBE2), Meteor BVRAAM, SCALP cruise missile, MICA air-to-air missiles
Current Status
- 36 Rafale aircraft already inducted (under 2016 inter-governmental agreement).
- New proposal: 114 additional aircraft.
- Around 90 aircraft proposed to be manufactured in India.
Defence Acquisition Council (DAC):
- Apex body for defence procurement decisions. Chaired by the Defence Minister. Grants Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for capital acquisitions.
Acceptance of Necessity (AoN):
- Formal approval of procurement requirements. First stage under the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP). Only clears the proposal; contract is signed later.
