Why in News?
Seventy-five women scientists selected under the DBT Biocare programme (March 2025) are still awaiting funds and salaries, delaying their research projects. The Ministry cited a new fund disbursal policy as the reason, raising concerns over career setbacks.
Description:
- Launched in 2011 by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), GoI.
- Objective: Promote women scientists in Biotechnology & allied areas by supporting career development and re-entry into research after breaks.
Mandate:
- Support unemployed / career-break women scientists up to age 55 years.
- Provide first independent extramural research funding as Principal Investigator (PI).
- Build capacity for women to re-enter mainstream science & research.

- Animal & Marine Biotechnology
- Bioengineering & Biomaterials
- Medical Biotechnology
- Environmental Biotechnology & Bioenergy
- Plant & Agricultural Biotechnology

- Provides fellowship + research grant to women in STEM.
