Why in News?
The National Board for Wildlife has approved redrawing the Sariska Tiger Reserve’s critical habitat and buffer zones, increasing core area while reducing the buffer. This aims to address habitat fragmentation, human encroachment, and dolomite mining impacts, pending Supreme Court clearance.

Location:
- Located in the state of Rajasthan.
- Spread over the Aravalli mountain range, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.
History:
- Former hunting ground of the Maharaja of Alwar.
- Declared a natural reserve in 1955.
- Proclaimed a national park in 1979 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Topography:
- Features include:
- Rocky landscape
- Scrub-thorn arid forests
- Grassy patches
- Hilly cliffs
- Semi-deciduous woodland
Vegetation Type:
- Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests
- Northern Tropical Thorn Forests
Flora:
- Dominated by Dhok trees (Anogeissus pendula).
- Other flora includes:
- Salar, Kadaya, Gol, Ber, Gugal
- Banyan, Bamboo, Kair, Adusta
Fauna:
- Apex predator: Royal Bengal Tiger
- Other mammals:
- Leopard
- Sambhar, Chital, Nilgai
- Four-horned antelope (Chousingha)
- Wild boar
- Rich avian and reptilian diversity are also present.
