Context
Recently, the Government informed Parliament that India curtailed 8,133 GWh of solar power during April–June 2026 to maintain grid security. A major reason is the mismatch between renewable energy capacity addition and transmission network expansion, creating congestion in the power grid.

Explanation
- Renewable energy curtailment refers to the deliberate reduction of electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind, even when generation is technically possible.
- Curtailment is carried out by grid operators to maintain grid stability, grid security, frequency balance and reliable power supply when electricity generation exceeds demand or transmission capacity.
- Since solar power is intermittent, its output varies with sunlight, requiring flexible generation, energy storage systems (Battery Energy Storage Systems – BESS, Pumped Storage Projects – PSPs) and improved grid management.
- India operates a National Grid managed by the Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-INDIA), which ensures secure and stable operation of the power system.
- Strengthening Green Energy Corridors, expanding inter-state transmission networks, deploying smart grids, forecasting renewable generation and increasing storage capacity are essential to reduce curtailment and support India’s clean energy transition.
