A new global analysis published in The Lancet Oncology projects a sharp rise in global breast cancer cases and mortality, with younger women increasingly affected.

About Breast Cancer:
- Uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in breast tissue. Most common cancer among women globally.
- Can spread (metastasize) to lymph nodes and distant organs.
Risk Factors:
- Ageing population, Obesity, Physical inactivity, Alcohol consumption, Hormonal factors, Family history
Screening & Prevention:
- Mammography for early detection.
- Lifestyle modifications include regular physical activity, healthy body weight, reduced alcohol intake
Key Findings of the Study:
A Looming Crisis in India:
- Leading Cancer: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Indian women, accounting for ~27% of all female cancers.
- The “Age Shift”: Indian women are diagnosed 10 years younger on average than their Western counterparts.
- Stage at Diagnosis: 50–70% of Indian patients present at Stage III or IV, compared to only 20% in the USA.
- Hotspots: Hyderabad recorded the highest age-adjusted incidence rate in India (54 per 100,000) in 2025-26.
