Samarthak: Indian Navy’s First Indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel (Source: PIB)

Context

Samarthak, the Indian Navy’s first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), was delivered on 27 August 2026. Built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at Kattupalli, the vessel has over 75% indigenous content and is designed for multiple naval roles.

Samarthak MPV: India’s Indigenous Naval Capability

Explanation

  • Samarthak, meaning “The Proponent”, is designed as a versatile platform rather than for a single specialised naval role.
  • It will primarily serve as a trial and evaluation platform, supporting the testing and assessment of naval systems and equipment.
  • It can undertake maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, strengthening Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA).
  • Its capabilities also include offshore patrolling and support for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
  • The vessel was constructed by L&T at Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu, demonstrating the growing participation of the private sector in defence shipbuilding.
  • With over 75% indigenous content, it supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the indigenisation of defence production.
  • Indigenous warship construction helps develop a self-reliant defence-industrial ecosystem and reduces dependence on foreign suppliers.
