Context:
The Prime Minister highlighted Sikkim as a model for the country in adopting natural/organic farming, emphasizing its early transition and success in promoting sustainable agriculture and boosting tourism and rural income
- Natural farming is a chemical-free farming system relying on local inputs (cow dung, urine, bio-cultures), soil biology, and ecological processes; linked with Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF).
- Focus on soil health, biodiversity, low input cost, climate resilience, and reduced dependence on synthetic fertilizers/pesticides.
- Pros: improves soil fertility, reduces input costs, enhances sustainability, promotes nutritional quality, eco-friendly and climate adaptive.
- Cons: lower yields initially, requires knowledge/skill-intensive practices, transition period risk, market linkage challenges for premium pricing.
- Sikkim became India’s first fully organic state (2016) by banning chemical inputs and converting entire cultivable land.
- Government support through policy push, certification, farmer training, and supply chains ensured success.
- Result: improved brand value, export potential, eco-tourism growth, and preservation of fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
