SMILE Mission and Earth’s Space Weather Shield

SMILE Mission and Earth’s Space Weather Shield

Context:

China and the European Space Agency are launching the SMILE mission to study how Earth’s magnetic shield interacts with solar winds and solar storms. The mission will help improve understanding of space weather, which can affect satellites, GPS, communication systems, aviation and power grids.

  • The Sun continuously emits solar wind, which consists of charged particles, magnetic fields and energy flowing through space.
  • Earth is protected by its magnetosphere, a magnetic shield created mainly by Earth’s internal magnetic field.
  • The magnetosphere deflects many harmful charged particles from the Sun and helps make Earth suitable for life.
  • When solar particles interact with Earth’s upper atmosphere near polar regions, they produce auroras, also called northern and southern lights.
  • Strong solar activity can create solar storms or geomagnetic storms, which may disturb satellites, radio communication, GPS navigation, power grids and airline operations.
  • The SMILE mission stands for Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer.
  • It is a joint mission of China and the European Space Agency (ESA).
  • The mission will capture images of Earth’s magnetosphere and study the interaction between solar wind, magnetosphere and ionosphere.
  • It will provide better real-time understanding of space weather and help forecast harmful solar events.
  • The mission will carry scientific instruments to observe X-rays, ultraviolet wavelengths, charged particles and magnetic fields.
