Species in News: Chimpanzees

Context: Scientists say 200 wild chimpanzees in Uganda have been locked in a violent ‘civil war’ for eight years

Chimpanzees
  • Chimpanzee is one of the closest living relatives of humans and is native to the forests and savannahs of tropical Africa.
  • They share a common ancestor with humans that lived about 7–8 million years ago.
  • There are four recognized subspecies: Central, Western, Nigeria-Cameroon, and Eastern chimpanzees.
  • Chimpanzees are classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, while the Western chimpanzee is Critically Endangered due to habitat loss and hunting.
  • They have an omnivorous diet, feeding on fruits, leaves, nuts, insects, and occasionally small animals.
  • In harsh environments, they adapt by using caves for shelter and consuming alternative food sources like mangrove leaves.
  • Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and are known for using tools, such as sticks to extract termites and stones to crack nuts.
  • They live in complex social groups, show emotions like empathy, practice grooming for bonding, and even exhibit cultural behaviors that vary across regions.
