Context:
Researchers have found that sperm whales use complex clicking sounds, known as codas, with patterns that show similarities to human speech structures. The study suggests that whale communication may involve more organised sound rules than previously understood.
- Sperm whale is the largest toothed whale and one of the deepest-diving marine mammals that communicate using clicking sounds; these clicks help in echolocation, social bonding and group coordination
- Scientific name: Physeter macrocephalus. It belongs to the group of cetaceans, which includes whales, dolphins and porpoises.
- They mainly feed on deep-sea squid, including giant squid.
- They are generally found in deep oceanic waters, not shallow coastal waters.
- They have a global distribution, especially in tropical, temperate and polar oceans.
- They are highly social; females and young usually live in groups, while adult males may be more solitary.
- Important threats include commercial whaling history, ship strikes, fishing gear entanglement, marine noise pollution, plastic pollution and climate change.
- IUCN Red List status: Vulnerable. The IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group noted that the updated 2025 assessment continues to list the sperm whale as Vulnerable.
- CITES: Sperm whale is listed in Appendix I, meaning international commercial trade is generally prohibited.
- CMS: It is listed under Appendix I of the Convention on Migratory Species, which is important because whales are migratory marine species requiring international cooperation.
- India angle: Sperm whales and their products are protected under India’s Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972; trade or possession of by-products such as ambergris is illegal.
- Researchers found that whale vocalisations may have structured features like phonology, where basic sound units combine in meaningful patterns.
- This does not mean whales have human-like language, but it shows that animal communication can be more complex than simple instinctive calls.
